post card project
Post Card Project is a process of human communication. Empathy and compassion encompass genuine connections between people. A postcard commemorates a particular time in life and/or the person sending it. Furthermore, drawing and writing can reveal certain qualities or characteristics about a person and who they are, where they have been, or how they represent themselves.
In July 2007, I placed an edition of eleven intaglio print postcards throughout places in downtown Toronto. Intaglio is a print process that is often described as meditative. For myself, Intaglio is a process that allows me to reflect on deep personal issues. The yellow and red image of a bird in a thorn nest represents a metaphorical self-portrait. Religion and spirituality are central to my personal growth, how I view society, and the way I make social connections. Eleven postcards were distributed and the number eleven (11) is symbolic to the purpose of making one-on-one ambiguous connections with people and a ritualistic method to the process of Post Card Project.
Postcards are often addressed to a specific person, but in Post Card Project chance or fate decide whom the post card is for. Each postcard was photographed in its placement. The placement was chosen according to the places I have been and things I have done throughout the day. The recipient can decide to be an anonymous collaborator in exchanging ambiguous information through text or drawing. In Post Card Project creativity, expression and post are the media of connecting people.
5 postcards were returned: a blank postcard, a postcard from a gallery attendant and dog owner, a postcard from an environmentally conscious person, a postcard from American football fan, and a postcard from “Rain Man”.
